One day, Pat Duncan and David Storey, two friends and Carson City natives, had a novel thought; “wouldn’t it be great if people could drink half-off craft beer?” That thought turned into reality when they launched Boise Brew Card in 2016 after David relocated to Idaho. The program grew with much success. Then came the launch of TapTokens in late 2017 and the Reno Brew Card in late 2018.

TapTokens is a subscription-based app that gives members half-off beer at participating craft beer breweries all over the country. Locally, participating breweries and taprooms include Final Draught, Huntsman Tavern, Silver Peak, Shoe Tree Brewing, The Union, Incline Spirits & Cigars, Brewforia and Great Basin Winery. There are also participants in Boise and Portland giving you 19 locations in the network and growing.

Once you download the TapTokens app for Android or Apple, you can subscribe for $4.99 per month. That monthly fee gets you  4 Tokens a month for each location – each good for half-off one beer at every brewery in the network. So, if you do the math, your monthly subscription will pay for itself after two beers.

The Reno Brew Card is a craft beer punch-card featuring local breweries, tap houses and pubs. It offers half-off pints at locations in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Incline Village and Truckee. Current participants include IMBĪB Custom Brews, Mellow Fellow Reno & Truckee, The Glass Die, Final Draught, Shoetree Brewing, The Fox Brewpub, The Union, Battle Born Social, Brewforia, Incline Spirits & Cigars and The Tap Wagon.

The card costs $20 and gives you 5 –  half-off beers at each location (one per visit). That’s over 50 half-off beers that is valid through the end of the year. You can purchase your Reno Brew Card at participating locations or at the RBC web site.

“The Brew Card and TapTokens gives people an opportunity to try new places and new beers”, says Duncan, “and we are saving craft beer lovers money, one beer at a time.”

A third discount beer program called the RBC Passport will be released soon.

An enthusiastic participant in both Tap Tokens and the Brew Card is Final Draught Bottles & Taps in Sparks. Proprietor, Becca Blaisdell says she “loves being part of it and so do participants. One of the promotions we do is, all ‘Keg Killers’ get a free Brew Card” (if the keg kicks on your pour, you are a “Keg Killer”).
