Locals sustain small breweries. In a town that has a transient population and tourist economy, Alibi Ale Works  has carved a great niche for the locals and tourists alike. On Wednesday, Alibi Ale Works will celebrate their 3rd anniversary.

I had a chance to chat with Kevin Drake, Co-Owner and Head Brewer via email about their past year. Like many breweries in our region, growth and expansion have been a theme. “Opening our Truckee Public House was a huge milestone. Turning out bottles on our new bottling line was definitely a milestone moment early in 2017”, said Drake.

Alibi opened their second location in Truckee’s historic downtown in June 2017 to offer another venue to enjoy their beers, along with regular live music and a creative food menu. It is a comfortable, well-crafted space for people to gather and relax. There are 22 frequently-rotating Alibi beers on draft, as well as cider, wine and non-alcoholic options.  “We had planned to focus primarily on distribution (bottles, cans and draft), but it became clear pretty quickly that at our modest scale and with the high overhead of brewing beer in Lake Tahoe, opening a second taproom was a strategically important move for us” continued Drake.

Kevin went on to say that “In 2017, we added an additional 25 people to Team Alibi, more than tripling the size of our team. We feel very lucky to have such amazing people working for and with us.”

Alibi doubled their production in 2017, over the previous year, and plan to almost double again in 2018. When looking at plans for their next year, “…we don’t have any major growth or expansion plans for 2018. We plan to focus 2018 mostly on getting better at what we’re already doing. Focus on beer quality and innovation. Focus on developing our team. Focus on building deeper relationships with our key retail accounts. Focus on larger bottling and canning runs. And we’re likely to start sending limited amounts of beer to some exciting beer markets outside of our Tahoe/Truckee/Reno region for the first time”, Drake said.

The anniversary celebration continues all week with beer releases, food and fun at both the brewery and Truckee locations.  Check their social feeds for details.
